Skincare is a Journey, Not a Destination!

This is the article I procrastinated on for a couple of years. I started my self-care blog on Instagram in 2021 (I guess?), and here and there, I indulged my passion for blogging alongside it. But life happened, and I had to prioritize my mental space for more important things. 😄 But here I am, slowly crawling back into my balanced girl era.

Believe me, this topic has been on my mind every single day, from the content I see to the complaints I hear from friends. So today, I’m finally putting it into writing and getting it out of my head.

Yes, skincare is a journey. In fact, self-care itself is a journey. But the objective of this post isn’t self-care as a whole (I’ll come back to that another day). Let’s talk about why skincare is not a destination.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, your outermost layer, and the part of you that you carry through every phase of life. Like everything else in your body, from birth to death, it keeps working for you, changing every minute. And just like your life, your skin evolves with age, lifestyle, diet, climate, and so much more.

Let’s say you have a specific skin concern, and you start treating it. Eventually, you achieve great results. Can you stop there? No, you can’t because now you must care for your skin in its new state. Your skin is unique, just like you. Your journey is unique. Your life doesn’t have a final destination, and neither does your skin. Life has milestones, and so does skin care. But you can’t just stop at a milestone, you have to keep going to maintain it and not fall back.

And because your journey is unique, copying someone else’s and expecting the same results is impossible. You can take inspiration, ask for help, and get direction, but at the end of the day, you are the one who decides your own skincare path. And for that, what you need most is self-awareness.

Trial and error are inevitable because, again, your journey is unique. No product review can guarantee that what worked for someone else will work 100% for you. Pay attention to your skin’s needs without over-judging it. And if you have multiple concerns, don’t try to tackle them all at once. Address them one by one, starting with the biggest issue first.

Also, remember, skincare isn’t just about products. It’s your whole lifestyle. It’s your diet, personal hygiene, surroundings, and even what your mind consumes. Your skin is a mirror; it reflects what you feed it, inside and out.

If you need a little inspiration from my journey, you can follow my personal blog on Instagram: LankanGirl SelfCare and you can check out the blog posts I wrote earlier about “Things to consider when buying beauty products” and “Self-care is not just the products you use.

So don’t be too hard on yourself. Keep going, keep learning, and embrace the journey. 💛
